Inlays -how are the corners fitted

Postby jssussex » Fri Jan 27, 2012 10:04 am

I just watched Tracy's video on inlay. When the pocket is cut how do you get the outside corners square instead of the round profile of the 90 degree v bit. It appears to me that the raised piece would have sharp corner fitting into a round corner when they are put together.

I've watched this twice and can't see how the corners can be routed to match the insert.

In the corners of the female part, the v-bit is raised as it advances to the corner, leaving a sharp corner on an angle to the depth of the cut. The sharp corner is produced because the vbit comes to a sharp point. So when you make the male part to go into the female part they are an exact fit, if you use the same v bit. This way no matter how much you sand the two parts after the glue up, you will always see a tight joint between the two parts.
